What is periodontitis?
Periodontitis is a bacterial inflammation of the periodontium, i.e. the gums, the periodontal ligament and the jawbone. Left untreated, the gums recede, the bone breaks down and the teeth become loose. In adults, periodontitis is one of the most common causes of tooth loss and is linked to general health, for example diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Early signs that are often overlooked
- Red or swollen gums
- Bleeding gums when brushing
- Bad breath
- Exposed, sensitive tooth necks
- Loose or shifting teeth
If you notice any of these signs, talk to us. The earlier periodontitis is detected, the easier and gentler it is to treat.
How we treat
After a thorough examination and measurement of the gum pockets, we draw up an individual treatment plan. It includes:
- Professional teeth cleaning including oral hygiene instruction as the basis of every periodontitis therapy
- Scaling: gentle cleaning of the root surfaces below the gum line
- Vector therapy: gentle ultrasonic cleaning of the gum pockets, particularly kind to the tissue
- Laser therapy: targeted reduction of bacteria in the pockets to support healing
- Regular aftercare (supportive periodontal therapy) so that the result remains stable in the long term
