In briefWith nitrous oxide sedation you breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small nasal mask. Within a few minutes fear and tension subside, you stay awake and responsive, and the effect has worn off completely a few minutes after treatment. Nitrous oxide is suitable for anxious patients, children and people with a gag reflex.

How nitrous oxide works

Through a small nasal mask you breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Within a few minutes a feeling of calm sets in, fear and tension subside, and pain perception decreases. You are awake, hear us and can talk to us. The concentration is adjusted individually during treatment.

Who nitrous oxide is suitable for

  • Anxious patients
  • Children who cannot yet cooperate calmly
  • People with a strong gag reflex
  • Longer or more extensive treatments, for example in implantology or periodontology

We clarify in a preliminary talk whether nitrous oxide is suitable for you. With certain conditions or during pregnancy it is not used.

Safety

Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for a long time and is considered very safe when applied professionally. The effect is easy to control and has worn off completely after a few minutes of breathing oxygen. After a short recovery period you can usually leave the practice on your own; we discuss this with you beforehand.
